German carmaker Audi announced that it will be recalling some 850,000 A4 units from the 2013 to 2015 model years, due to a software issue that could prevent airbags from properly deploying.
The recall comes on the heels of a massive recall covering millions of vehicles and more than 10 carmakers, over Takata airbags with defective inflators that could cause the airbags to explode, instead of cushioning front passengers in the event of a crash. This time, however, the issue is with the airbag software, and it was discovered during a routine quality assurance test. According to an Audi spokesman, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries in connection to the defect.
Repairs should take approximately 20 minutes per car to complete, though a separate spokesman claims that it should only be “a matter of three minutes” before the software update is installed and completed. Further, Audi reassured consumers that this recall isn’t in connection with the above mentioned Takata-related recall, which continues to escalate as more and more recalls are announced.
