It should be less than a month from now, but the iPhone 6 release date is definitely in the horizon, with the device’s launch date roughly two weeks away. As is the case with every other device launch, it looks like carrier stores and retailers are trying to get rid of excess stock of outgoing devices, and a new report claims Verizon has gotten the ball rolling with the iPhone 5c.
The well-connected AppleInsider claims that Verizon is seemingly jettisoning stock of the less popular 32 GB iPhone 5c as it prepares for the iPhone 6 release date. A look at the Verizon website shows the 32 GB iPhone 5c in limited stock, with the blue flavor being the only one available. Other outgoing iPhones, like the 16 GB iPhone 5c and all iPhone 5s variants based on color and storage, remain in stock, but if Verizon is really getting rid of that 32 GB iPhone 5c stock, it shouldn’t be long before more popular versions of the iPhone 5c, as well as the iPhone 5s, follow suit.
Adding to this possibility is the fact that Verizon is now selling the iPhone 5s for just $99 for the 16 GB edition, and $199 for the 64 GB version, both representing half-price discounts. Then again, this could simply be a case of Verizon mercifully “killing off” the iPhone 5c, considering its lackluster sales since its September 2013 release.
Other carriers don’t appear to have started the liquidation process, but may likely do so in the coming days. AT&T still has every iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c model available, and that appears to be the case with Sprint as well. The iPhone 6 is rumored for a September 9 unveiling, and should be hitting stores on September 19 should Apple stick to its tried-and-true schedule for iPhone release dates.
