If you’re a Tesla Roadster owner, Elon Musk has something for you right on time for Christmas. In a tweet made Friday, the Tesla CEO said he will be announcing details on a Roadster update, and while he’s playing it coy so far, he’s hinted that “several crisis issues with higher priority pushed this out longer than expected.”
That doesn’t really say much, but Musk said earlier in the year at Tesla’s shareholder meeting that the California automaker will be doing “something cool” with the Roadster before the year ends. The new tweet is in line with this promise, though we shall be seeing whether Musk will be good as his word, as he had told Auto Express in the summer that the Roadster update will include the addition of an upgraded battery. This battery should be able to allow the convertible to go up to 400 miles per charge, or about 35 percent more than the Model S’ capacity. As a point of reference, the Roadster, which was sold from 2008 to 2011, is able to go 245 miles per charge.
Though it appears that Tesla is ready to roll out its Roadster update before we say goodbye to 2014, one can’t help but wonder what the “crisis issues” were that had pushed the update back so far. Chances are Tesla will remain silent on that regard, but what matters is that the update is coming, and it’s likely to arrive right before the year ends.
