The worries keep mounting up for General Motors, as it announced another two recalls today, boosting the total number of GM recalls to 71 for the whole 2014.
The first recall involves more than 430,000 Cadillac SRX and Saab 9-4X SUVs, most of them belonging to owners in North America. According to GM, rear suspension nuts on these vehicles may not have been correctly tightened. This may result in the toe link adjuster separating from the vehicles’ suspension, leading to a potential crash. The affected SRX models are from the 2011 to 2015 model years, while the Saab 9-4Xs are from the 2011 and 2012 model years. No fatalities have been reported as a result of this issue, but there have been three crashes and two injuries due to it.
The second recall involves about 94,000 2013 to 2015 model year Chevrolet Sparks, and is just as serious as the first one, as it may also lead to a crash. GM says rust on these Spark mini-cars can make the secondary hood latch stick in place, making the hood abruptly open and potentially block a driver’s line of sight while driving. GM is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities from the hood latch issue.
In both cases, GM has confirmed that it will be making the necessary adjustments free of charge, if a vehicle is affected. For the SRX, unsold units will be inspected to ensure the nuts are properly tightened.
