A few months ago, Tesla updated its older Roadster electric cars with a software patch that greatly extended the vehicles’ range. And now, the company hopes to deal with Model S owners’ “range anxiety” as it prepares to roll out a similar update in the coming days.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was a bit coy when he sent out a series of tweets over the weekend, but the bottom line is that he promised a software update that would end “range anxiety” for Model S owners. Prior to this announcement, Tesla released a new battery pack for the Model S, improving electric range from about 205 miles to 265 miles. The company has also been ramping up its Supercharger network, providing owners with more places to charge their Model S sedans. But this update, says Musk, may greatly improve electric range for the “entire Model S fleet.”
As stated earlier, Musk was light on the details, but he did say that Tesla will be holding a press conference Thursday, where the carmaker should reveal everything about the software update, as well as how it plans to address all that “range anxiety.” With Chevrolet, Audi, and other carmakers set to release their own electric vehicles with longer ranges, Tesla appears to be doing what it could to catch up, and this update may be just what it takes.
