Yesterday, Tesla announced in a press release a new software update that would introduce new features to Model S units around the world, with some features unique to specific markets. That led some to speculate that today’s “D” launch wouldn’t see the introduction of a new vehicle, but rather a new feature or two for the Model S. Still, there were no answers to the big question regarding today’s upcoming launch – just what will Tesla be unveiling?
At a press conference yesterday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk didn’t give away much, and in fact, he was coy enough to tell the media that he has a “surprise” in store for the “D” press event. The event will be held at the Hawthorne Airport in California, next to the company’s design studio, and according to Musk, said surprise may be unveiled immediately; that still isn’t giving away much, but it certainly has people talking ahead of the big event.
Right now, chances are Tesla will be introducing a feature, and not a car. All-wheel-drive has been mooted as one possibility, allowing the company to make inroads when it comes to selling the Model S in colder states that are more prone to snowfall, while some believe the Model S will receive another software update that would give it some driverless capabilities.
So could the “D” stand for “drive,” as in all-wheel-drive, or will it stand for “driverless”? The clock is ticking, and it won’t be long before Tesla answers all questions and unveils that surprise to the public.
