The Honda Accord had its turn to lead the midsize sedan class in sales for the months of August and September, but the Toyota Camry was back in familiar territory last month, leading the way with a total of 33,164 cars sold.
In fact, the Camry retook the midsize sales lead in style, as it was the only car in its class to sell more than 30,000 units in the month of October. The Accord was a rather distant second with 27,128 units sold, while the Nissan Altima rounded out the podium spots, finishing third with 23,544 sales. The Ford Fusion was fourth place as the top-selling American midsize sedan, with a total of 22,846 units sold.
While there were few surprises in the top four, the release of several new and refreshed models had resulted in a bit of a shakeup in the other positions. The Chrysler 200, which had been struggling ahead of its refresh, took seventh place with a total of 11,675 units sold, and outdid the Chevrolet Malibu, usually a fifth-placer in terms of sales, which finished eighth last month with 11,131 sales. Right ahead of those two were two Korean carmakers’ midsize sedans – the fifth-place Hyundai Sonata (15,563) and the sixth-place Kia Optima (11,840).
The top ten was completed by the Volkswagen Passat (eighth, 6,513 units), the Subaru Legacy (ninth, 6,362), and the Mazda6 (tenth, 3,149). At last place with 1,347 units sold was the Dodge Avenger. Year-to-date, the Toyota Camry still leads comfortably with 368,142 units sold through October 31, 2014, while the Honda Accord (331,510) and Nissan Altima (280,479) retained their second and third positions respectively.
