Mercedes is reportedly planning to double down on its AMG high-performance business, and it plans to do so by releasing more affordable cars within the next three years.
Considering the popularity of affordable, yet powerful cars at lower price points, the new AMG Sport line would be all about vehicles that have higher-end engines, all-wheel drive, and performance-optimized suspension, brakes, and tuning, but at a price that’s certainly lower than $222,000. That’s what buyers have to pay for a Mercedes-AMG S-Class, and while we don’t know just how cheap the new AMG Sport cars will be, AMG head Tobias Moers promised “more accessible” pricing to appeal to “an even broader range of customers.”
Aside from the AMG Sport series, Mercedes is hoping to hit a target of 64,400 vehicles in 2017 with its new AMG GT sports car. The sales target is twice that of last year’s total sales of 32,200. The AMG unit, in specific, has targets of 40,000 units delivered in the 2014 calendar year, a feat it had accomplished in 2010 when it expanded its roster to include souped-up compacts such as the CLA45 AMG.
The AMG GT, while still quite premium by almost every pricing standard, is a two-seat sports car that runs on a 462-horsepower V8 engine and is capable of going from 0 to 62 mph in less than four seconds. That makes it faster than competing luxury sports cars like the Porsche 911, but AMG has plans to expand the line to include more variants apart from the base GT and the upscale GT S.
