Speaking at the Washington Auto Show, Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen admitted that the company may not be ready to unveil a new small SUV until four years from now at the very earliest.
As Cadillac tries to break its losing stream, the luxury automaker has made some interesting plans for the future, including the release of a small SUV. However, de Nysschen believes that it might not be a while before such a vehicle debuts. “Product development life cycles being what they are, I don’t have a date in mind but I would estimate it is at least four years away,” said de Nysschen, who took over as president of Cadillac late last year.
Details on the small SUV are still limited, but the vehicle should slot a couple rungs under the Escalade in the SUV category, and be priced substantially less; the base Escalade now costs about $68,000. But Cadillac does have plans to use this SUV as part of its expansion initiative, which involves the investment of $12 billion over five years, and the launch of eight new vehicles. Another SUV, the midsize Cadillac SRX, is currently priced at about $38,000.
Separate from the small SUV, de Nysschen also provided some details on the “flagship” Cadillac CT6, which is expected to be a very important vehicle for the company. According to de Nysschen, the CT6 will definitely be announced at the New York Auto Show on March 31, though he failed to provide any information on how the vehicle may cost, apart from its being the most expensive Caddy in the automaker’s lineup.
